Johann Stohner is a Managing Director with Alvarez & Marsal in Munich and co-leads the German Restructuring practice. He brings more than 16 years of international experience as a restructuring consultant and turnaround manager in large enterprises and mid-sized companies.

Focusing on the design and implementation of holistic restructuring and performance improvement programs, Mr. Stohner has a proven track record as a Chief Restructuring Officer (CRO) and Interim Chief Financial Officer (CFO). He has also been involved in the development and execution of optimized exits and transactions in special situations including going-concern sales, management buy outs, carve outs and accelerated wind downs.

Mr. Stohner has led engagements throughout Europe, China and the United States, serving clients across a wide range of industries, including renewable energies, manufacturing, engineering, construction, automotive, retail and consumer goods.

Currently, he is supporting a prominent German family office with its strategic and structural realignment, as well as the reorganization of selected portfolio companies.

Mr. Stohner was recently responsible for the restructuring of a U.S.-based manufacturer of thin-film solar panels and portable chargers. As the shareholders’ Chief Representative, he conducted the commercial negotiations during the successful sale to a strategic investor.

Previously, he was appointed as Chief Restructuring Adviser by a publicly listed clean-tech company. After playing a significant role in ensuring a syndicated loan of approximately €0.4 billion, he was the senior adviser to the supervisory board during the entire restructuring process.

Prior to this engagement, Mr. Stohner served almost two years as CRO and Interim CFO for Europe's leading open fireplaces manufacturer. He successfully negotiated a syndicated bank loan and achieved additional funding based on newly introduced alternative financing sources (e.g. retail credit facility, factoring, sale-and-lease-back).

Before this, Mr. Stohner was engaged by Lone Star Funds to drive the restructuring and sales process for one of their portfolio companies as Interim CFO. After the closing of the transaction, he was responsible for the PMI process of both finance departments.

Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Stohner served as Managing Partner of a German turnaround management boutique firm with a focus on evaluating and implementing solutions for companies in distress. He also worked with PricewaterhouseCoopers and led business recovery services teams at the Munich and London offices.

Mr. Stohner studied at the University of Regensburg and the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich and earned a master’s degree in economics (Diplom-Volkswirt) from the University of Regensburg. A German national, he is fluent in German and English.
