A&M Activist Alert for Europe | Interim Outlook for 2021

Emerging trends point to a resurgence of campaigns, rising ESG demands and increasing pressure on European boards

The Return of Shareholder Activism

This interim outlook provides an update on activist trends as European markets emerged from the acute phase of the pandemic. The report identifies 157 corporates at heightened risk of activist targeting and highlights a growing expectation that public campaigns would accelerate as economic conditions stabilised and performance differences became more visible.

The analysis points to increased activist attention in the UK, France and Switzerland, alongside strong interest in industrial, technology, healthcare and consumer sectors. It also notes a sharp rise in environmental and social campaigns and highlights the increasing likelihood of companies facing pressure from multiple activists simultaneously. As investors expand their focus beyond governance and financial performance, boards are challenged to respond to a broader and more complex set of stakeholder expectations.
