John Bettley-Smith

Across Mr. Bettley-Smith’s career, he has helped infrastructure funds, large corporates, and sovereign wealth funds navigate the tax issues that arise at each stage of the transaction life cycle. He has led on key tax workstreams as part of the acquisition process (both due diligence and structuring), advising portfolio companies on post-acquisition strategy, strategic acquisitions and refinancings, structure maintenance, and exit readiness.
Mr. Bettley-Smith also works on the tax aspects of the sale process, including due diligence and exit structuring. He has worked in various industries on both domestic and international transactions with clients including Vodafone, Blackstone, Equitix, KKR, Igneo Infrastructure Partners, UBS, GIC, Basalt, and Masdar. Mr. Bettley-Smith also has experience in the private equity sector, having worked on a number of large-cap deals.
Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Bettley-Smith was a Director with the M&A and Funds Tax group at Deloitte, where he was a key part of both the infrastructure and sovereign wealth fund offerings.
Mr. Bettley-Smith earned a bachelor’s degree (first class honors) in finance, accounting, and management from the University of Nottingham. He is a qualified Chartered Accountant (ICAS) and Chartered Tax Adviser.
