Laura Katherine Schembri is a Director with Alvarez & Marsal’s (A&M) restructuring practice (NACR). She earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Arkansas.

In the Q&A below, Laura Katherine discusses how her career in restructuring is rewarding, the best part of being 100 percent remote, and how she loves being a mom to her boys.

What led you to pursue a career in restructuring? Were there any notable “ah-ha” moments that led you to that decision?

After the 2008 financial crisis, the A&M restructuring team was growing and I was fortunate to join the team as an analyst. My work at A&M quickly taught me that a career in restructuring is genuinely rewarding because I can use my finance skills to help companies manage through hard times and turn around unprofitable operations. I love seeing the positive impact of my work and how we truly help our clients achieve success.

Tell us about your experience in NACR and the skill sets you strengthened/acquired while at A&M?

I initially joined the Dallas NACR office and immediately felt welcomed by a friendly, motivating and fun team. I learned how to dig into problems and figure things out along the way. I learned to be confident in my own abilities and in the quality of my team. A&M has given me real, hands-on experience in detailed financial modeling, deal structuring and negotiating, as well as countless relationships in the restructuring industry.

You recently rejoined A&M in September 2022 on a part-time basis. What were some of your reasons for returning? What would you tell someone who has left and is contemplating coming back?

When I originally came to A&M, I was excited to join an energetic culture with a growth mindset. When the opportunity to rejoin A&M came around, I didn’t hesitate. I knew immediately that I wanted to be back on the team and that it was the right time in my life to jump back in. I took a break from working to focus on my three small children and I’m glad that I did. I have a fresh perspective and more energy than ever. I would tell someone else who is contemplating coming back that rejoining A&M is like coming home after traveling abroad. Everything is familiar and I truly appreciate the relationships that I’ve been fortunate to keep for many years.

You’re currently 100 percent remote. What’s your favorite part about working remotely? Do you have a set routine?

The best part about being 100 percent remote is that I am physically present for my children. My current routine is getting everyone ready for school in the mornings and then focusing on work while the children are away. Afternoons are a mix of Teams calls, emails, homework and after-school activities. I try to draw a firm boundary around my work time and family time so that I’m efficient and get as much done as possible.

How does A&M differ from other companies?

A&M is a firm that incentivizes and rewards performance. I feel like I am noticed and that my work matters here. I appreciate that there is a path here for me leading to growth, and I’m excited to take on the challenge. A&M has also shown that it is open to flexible work schedules and work-life balance.

What’s a career highlight you’re most proud of?

I am most proud of returning to work in finance after having three children. Being a working mom with young children is challenging, but very rewarding. I enjoy any opportunity to mentor and support other women at a similar stage.

What energizes you about your career?

I am energized by the talented professionals around me — their accomplishments and hard work inspire me to improve. I also love that each day brings a new challenge working with distressed clients. My work is never boring, and I enjoy being creative and figuring out a custom solution to each new problem.

What are some of your hobbies and passions outside of work?

I love being a mom of all boys, art projects, teaching children’s classes, traveling abroad and playing sports.

What are some random fun facts about you?

I have lived in 10 cities and seven states, I have a small embroidery business called Manhasset Monogram, and I have a southern accent in New York.
