Michael Potter is a Managing Director with Alvarez & Marsal Public Sector Services in Los Angeles. He supports public sector organizations in building financial management capacity, improving efficiency, and aligning financial planning capabilities with organizational strategy.

With more than 15 years of state, local, and education experience, Mr. Potter has led major financial sustainability improvement initiatives at dozens of large school districts, municipal governments, and state agencies. He works side by side with agency executives to strengthen financial management while planning and executing transformation to improve efficiency, accountability, and return on investment. 

Mr. Potter’s notable assignments include supporting the bankruptcy-like restructuring of a toll and highways authority; leading the financial and operational transformation of many K-12 school districts; and leading high-profile investigations and performance reviews of major city departments and independent authorities. 

Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Potter spent six years with Grant Thornton in Washington, DC, where he provided financial management and operational efficiency support to various government and non-profit organizations. 

Mr. Potter earned a bachelor’s degree in public administration from Oakland University, and a master's degree in public affairs (MPA) (concentrations in local government and public financial management) from Indiana University. He is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) and Six Sigma Green Belt.
