His primary areas of focus include integrated health care systems, academic medical centers, large community hospitals and physician group practices.
With more than 20 years of healthcare management experience, Dr. Ghezzi has successfully led academic hospitals and community systems and has served as senior adviser to the management and Boards of private and public companies regarding business strategy, mergers and acquisitions, operational improvements and physician integration.
He recently served as Interim Chief Executive Officer and President of the West Penn Allegheny Health System in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and led the system through a successful affiliation with Highmark Blue Cross / Blue Shield.
Before A&M, Dr. Ghezzi founded Ghezzi & Associates LLC in Washington, D.C. and served as the firm’s principal for 10 years. In this role, he advised Providence Alaska Medical Center, Little Company of Mary Hospital, San Joaquin Community Hospitaland Greater Hazelton Health Alliance. More recently, he served as President and CEO of Forum Health. In this capacity, he led a strategic and operational turnaround of the three-hospital system from near insolvency to financial stability – strengthening the system’s cash position, reducing unfunded pension liability, selling non-core assets, retiring debt and managing creditor relationships.
Previously, Dr. Ghezzi served as Chief Operating Officer of Inova Fairfax Hospital and Vice President of the Inova Health System. Under his leadership, the hospital was named a magnet hospital for nursing, Top 100 hospital by HCIA / Mercer and Best in Cardiology / Cardiac Surgery, Oncology, and Pulmonary by U.S. News and World Report.
Earlier, he served as Medical Director and Chief Operating Officer of George Washington University Hospital, which he helped return to profitability and prepare for sale. He also served as a Director of the George Washington University Health Plan, inaugural Director of the Ronald Reagan Institute of Emergency Medicine, and Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and Surgery at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences.
Dr. Ghezzi earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, magna cum laude, from Washington and Jefferson College and a master’s degree in business administration, with distinction and a concentration in finance, from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He earned a medical degree from Georgetown University.
Dr. Ghezzi is board certified in emergency medicine and began practicing in 1983. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians.
