Mr. Masterson brings deep expertise in conducting commercial diligence, developing and assessing strategic plans and growth initiatives, and identifying profit-improvement opportunities for his clients. He has directed more than 100 projects related to strategy, mergers and acquisitions transactions, growth strategies, and operating improvements for a wide range of corporate clients and private equity companies, including several of the largest studios, telecommunications firms and electronics firms in addition to a large number of top-tier and upper middle-market private equity firms.
Examples of Mr. Masterson’s commercial diligence work for private equity clients include: a market and competitive assessment for a $600 million internet publisher involving multiple market verticals in a public-to-private transaction; an assessment of the competitive market dynamics for a leading set-top-box / pay TV software company to pressure test the target’s ability to maintain market share within its key customer base of cable and satellite TV given the changing landscape of pay TV and emerging threats of alternate TV delivery platforms; and a market and customer segment assessment for a $125 million media and entertainment company focused on publishing, entertainment and marketing.
Mr. Masterson’s corporate strategy projects include a comprehensive strategy for a digital fingerprint technology business unit of a leading music rights organization involving a global market assessment of potential applications and organizational process redesign for the sales and marketing function. For a broadcaster linked advertising business, assessed the potential growth opportunities for a digital marketing platform linked loyalty programs and the value of data based marketing initiatives linked to the platform.
Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Masterson was a co-leader of L.E.K. Consulting’s private equity practice on the West Coast. Previously, his roles include the CEO of an internet-based retailer, and positions with the World Bank, McKinsey & Co. and Mitsubishi International.
Mr. Masterson earned his bachelor’s degree, with honors, summa cum laude, in international studies from the University of Washington, and earned a master’s degree from Stanford’s Graduate School of Business.
