Bernhard Engel is a Managing Director and Head of Alvarez & Marsal’s Austrian and CEE business in Vienna, and co-leads the firm’s Financial Industry Advisory Services in the DACH region. He specializes in financial institution balance sheet optimization and execution through portfolio sales, securitization and management, as well as broader financial services restructuring, optimization and mergers and acquisitions.

Mr. Engel has executed 100+ FS transactions, restructuring and optimization programs in Europe as advisor, principal and investor. Recently, he has built (as founding Chief Executive Officer) a Financial Advisory, NPLs Restructuring, Workout and Digital Servicing Business across DACH and CEE, which was rolled out to seven countries with more than 200 people via a buy and build strategy. He also acquired financial institutions and loan portfolios in Poland, Hungary, Romania, Croatia and Slovenia.

Mr. Engel’s notable assignments include serving as Head of Capital Management and Credit Treasury of a Leading European Banking Group for Austria/CEE, responsible for balance sheet optimization for a B/S of €200 billion and an investment book of structured credit products of €2 billion. He restructured banks in Ukraine and Kazakhstan via guarantee scheme transactions; issued one of the largest securitizations (€8 billion) for capital generation purposes in Germany and Austria; and executed the first Non-Performing Loans transaction in Austria with a volume of €1.5 billion.

Additionally, Mr. Engel build up and led an FS deals business of a Big 4 company, which became the foundation for a pan-industry deals business across Austria/CEE. He also led the overall FS industry practice and subsequently led the European FS Deals team. During this period, he pioneered NPL transactions via synthetic and true sale structures in Germany, Austria, Romania, Croatia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Montenegro, with an overall volume of €25 billion, the largest being a carve-out of a €3 billion NPL portfolio in Romania.

Furthermore, Mr. Engel has also restructured distressed banks via bad and good bank solutions and subsequently sold off bad banks/portfolios for Germany and Austria and worked buy-side for private equity investors in Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia, Ukraine and Italy. 

Mr. Engel earned an MBA from IMADEC University and a master's degree in legal studies from the University of Vienna.
