How a Director’s Return to A&M Demonstrates the Power of Relationships and Continuous Improvement in Consulting
Anna Pille is a Director with Alvarez & Marsal’s Corporate Performance Improvement practice in Chicago. She earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical and biomolecular engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
In this Q&A, Anna shares the inspiration behind her return to A&M, her strategies for achieving results in manufacturing, and the invaluable lessons she’s learned from her mentors. She also gives us a glimpse into her passions outside work, from crafting homemade pasta to conquering Orange Theory classes with her A&M teammates.
What key factors influenced your decision to return to A&M?
The people I worked with and the type of work we’re doing stood out the most to me. I loved being consistently challenged by the variety of projects we tackled, each requiring a unique approach and perspective. Collaborating with talented and driven colleagues made the experience even more rewarding.
Essential Skills for Success in Consulting and Manufacturing Leadership
Reflecting on your time at A&M, which skills have you gained, and how have they contributed to your success?
Coming from industry and working with other consulting firms, I truly value the impact we make with clients and the immediate results we see. I’ve also learned that networking is essential—whenever I encounter something I don’t know, there’s always someone willing to help.
Who are your closest mentors, and what key lessons have they taught you?
There are so many. Chris Clower has taught me how to approach client challenges with a fresh perspective. Christine Montgomery is a sourcing master, and I’ve tried to absorb as much as I can from her expertise in negotiating.
What strategies do you find most effective for driving continuous improvement in manufacturing?
Engaging the client and encouraging them to take ownership as early as possible is one of the most effective strategies for driving continuous improvement. This means involving shop-floor decision-makers to share their day-to-day perspectives, which helps identify opportunities and accelerate progress. Emphasizing a mindset of “progress, not perfection” ensures momentum is maintained throughout the improvement process.
Strategies for Continuous Improvement in Manufacturing Operations
How do you apply Lean Six Sigma and Kaizen to boost productivity and reduce waste globally?
Process improvement impacts everything we do, both at work and at home. By mapping processes and identifying gaps, we can make changes faster, improving throughput and reducing waste. Utilizing a Kaizen team made up of individuals who do the job daily energizes the team and drives better, longer-lasting results.
What advice would you give on building and maintaining strong professional relationships?
Understanding what drives and motivates people is a priority for me. It helps me connect with individuals from all walks of life and identify ways to positively influence their day-to-day experiences. By actively listening and serving as a connector, I’m able to support others in advancing and thriving in their careers.
How Hobbies and Work-Life Balance Drive Professional Growth
How have your hobbies or interests outside work influenced your personal and professional growth?
My hobbies help me maintain a better work-life balance. I love going to Orange Theory classes and have found a group of A&M colleagues who also attend. We cheer each other on, fostering a supportive, yet competitive environment that keeps us motivated.
Which destination is next on your travel list, and why?
My bucket list travel destination is Mendoza, Argentina. I’m excited to explore the region where Malbec wine is predominantly made.
With your love for hosting and cooking dishes, do you have a favorite recipe or dish you enjoy sharing at dinner parties?
I love experimenting with new and challenging dishes. Recently, I prepared a delicious Bolognese with homemade pappardelle noodles for my family. I love to bake and share new cookie recipes—perhaps even pairing them with a glass of Malbec!
