Mentorship in Action: A Manager's Career Journey at A&M

Linh Hoang is a Manager with Alvarez & Marsal’s Consumer and Retail Group in Los Angeles. She earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and an MBA from New York University.

In this Q&A, Linh reflects on how her time at A&M deepened her industry expertise, strengthened her confidence and shaped her career.

Why Choose A&M?

What drew you to intern at A&M, and what inspired your decision to return full-time?

During my internship, I was drawn to the chance to work in consumer and retail consulting, analyzing brand dynamics, customer behavior and market trends. What ultimately inspired me to return full-time were the people—veteran consultants and industry operators who challenged me, supported me and showed me A&M is a place to keep learning and build a meaningful career.

Mentorship and Learning in Consulting

How has A&M supported your personal or professional development since you joined?

From day one, A&M has encouraged me to take initiative and own my contributions. Working on projects from SKU rationalization to enterprise-wide turnarounds has given me invaluable hands-on experience and accelerated my growth both personally and professionally.

Culture and Belonging at A&M

How would you describe the culture of your local office or team?

The project teams I’ve worked with are collaborative, respectful and fun. We hold each other to high standards and push ourselves to deliver the best results, while also balancing hard work with moments of levity and celebration. After completing a large deliverable, our team celebrated together—a simple but memorable moment filled with gratitude for one another.

Living A&M’s Core Value of Humility

How does A&M’s core value of Humility resonate with you, and where have you seen it in action at A&M?

To me, humility means embracing continuous learning, valuing others’ perspectives and prioritizing the team over individual recognition. At A&M, being a “humble expert” isn’t just a phrase—it’s lived every day. It shapes how we work with clients and treat each other.

Everyone on our team, regardless of tenure, is open to feedback, willing to ask questions and focused on achieving the best outcome together. I’ve seen leaders coach juniors not just on technical details but also on how to think critically and approach challenges differently. I’ve also seen associates share alternative perspectives with confidence, knowing they’ll be heard and respected.

Just for Fun—Book Recommendation

What book, show, or podcast would you recommend and why?

I’m currently reading The Power of Moments by Chip and Dan Heath and highly recommend it. The book shows how brief experiences can leave lasting impressions and shape our lives. I love how the authors use real-world stories to demonstrate how we can intentionally create these moments in business, education, relationships and everyday life. It’s inspiring, practical and has influenced how I think about the impact of small actions.
