The Future of the Rule of Law in Guatemala, Cyrus R. Vance Center for International Justice

Over the past decade, an anti-corruption wave has spread across Latin America, leading private-sector organizations to prioritize and develop anti-corruption compliance programs and policies to get ahead of future regulatory scrutiny – both in the local region and from abroad. In the fight against corruption, prioritizing compliance allows the private sector to set a country’s tone and influence its economic growth.

In a recent webinar hosted by The Cyrus R. Vance Center for International Justice’s Lawyers Council for Civil and Economic Rights, Managing Director and anti-corruption expert Sergio Moro said:

“Fighting corruption is in the interest of the business community. Less corruption brings higher levels of foreign investment, promotes free competition in the private sector and creates trust which is a key factor for economic development. Additionally, building robust compliance systems can be a tool for companies to avoid extortion efforts by public officials.”

Vance Center Committee member and Managing Director Richard Fogarty, an expert in anti-corruption in Latin America, also offered his perspective as an investigator and a former public corruption attorney. During the event, Rich emphasized the crucial role that the international business community plays in fostering anti-corruption reform and judiciary independence, specifically in Guatemala but also throughout Central and Latin America.
