Dr. Michael Schmaelzle is a Managing Director with Alvarez & Marsal Corporate Transformation Services in Munich.

Dr. Schmaelzle brings more than 15 years of experience in leading technology-enabled transformations and performance improvement programs in the automotive and industrial sectors. His primary areas of concentration include commercial transformations, commercial excellence programs (sales and service), and end-to-end value creation programs that sustainably unlock revenue, margin growth, and cost advantage.

Dr. Schmaelzle has worked with clients across the automotive sector (suppliers, passenger cars, and commercial vehicles), the industrial machinery sector, and private equity sector. He has led numerous enterprise-wide performance and transformation programs, including sales and service transformations delivering double-digit efficiency gains, vehicle and product contribution margin uplift programs, and full-potential programs across the entire value chain to achieve sustainable EBIT improvement.

Notably, Dr. Schmaelzle has advised global original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and suppliers on commercial and operating model transformations, including the redesign of European sales organizations, the build-up of a parts distribution center, and an analytics-based margin optimization program at the point of sale. He has also supported complex carve-outs, restructurings, and independent business reviews, as well as the build-up of technology and engineering operating models to enable future readiness.

Prior to joining A&M, Dr. Schmaelzle spent 15 years with Boston Consulting Group (BCG), where he most recently served as Managing Director and Partner. At BCG, he was a core member of the Automotive and Industrial Goods practices.

Dr. Schmaelzle earned a master’s degree in mathematics and physics from Heidelberg University and a PhD in production management from the WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management, including a pre-doctoral fellowship at the Northwestern University Kellogg School of Management. A German national, he is fluent in German and English.
