The restructuring landscape continues to evolve and grow more complex, but the underlying causes of company distress remain unchanged. The ability for a financial adviser to understand both and work side-by-side with management is critical.
Michael Kang is a Managing Director with Alvarez & Marsal in San Francisco. He advises boards of directors, management teams, investment groups and creditors on a broad range of turnaround, performance improvement and restructuring issues.

With more than 20 years of diverse financial advisory experience, Mr. Kang has been involved in all aspects of the reorganization process. His expertise includes evaluating business plans and capital structures, preparing cash forecast models, developing turnaround strategies, implementing liquidity conservation and monitoring strategies and preparing plans of reorganization. He has extensive experience leading projects involving SEC reporting, forensic accounting, restatements and financial statement compilation. Mr. Kang was designated as an expert witness and has been deposed and testified in federal court matters.

Mr. Kang most recently completed an 18-month assignment as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Knowledge Universe. Through its primary brands, Kindercare, CCLC and Champions, Knowledge Universe is the largest private provider of early childhood education services in the U.S. with over 30,000 employees operating approximately 1,700 locations nationwide with revenue in excess of $1.4 billion. He was responsible for all financial operations functions including financial planning and analysis (FP&A), accounting, internal audit, procurement, treasury, tax and IT. Mr. Kang oversaw numerous cost reduction, fleet rationalization and revenue enhancement initiatives which resulted in year over year EBITDA growth of 65 percent during his tenure.

Previously, Mr. Kang served as Interim CFO and Chief Restructuring Officer (CRO) of Rodeo Creek Gold Inc., leading its restructuring effort and successful sale to a private-equity buyer, as well as CRO of ShengdaTech, Inc., a diversified chemicals manufacturer with operations in mainland China.

Mr. Kang also served as CRO of Hines Horticulture Inc. and in various interim management roles for a $2 billion publicly-traded specialty retail services company, including Interim Controller and Deputy CFO. His other clients have included Language Line Services, Citadel Broadcasting, Novelis, Qwest Communications, Oakwood Homes and ICG Communications.

Prior to A&M, Mr. Kang spent 10 years with the corporate restructuring and dispute analysis practices of two Big Four accounting firms in Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Mr. Kang earned a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of California Los Angeles and an MBA from the University of California Berkeley, Haas School of Business. He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a Certified Insolvency and Restructuring Advisor (CIRA). He previously served on the board of directors of the Northern California Turnaround Management Association and is a member of the Association of Insolvency and Restructuring Advisors.
