Michael Johns

With more than 22 years of experience, Mr. Johns has worked across the Big Four international accounting firms, commerce and government. His notable engagements include leading a team of professional services staff providing tax advisory and compliance services to high-profile clients (ASX listed, private equity, large multinational and government organisations). He has assisted ASX and multinational clients to understand the Australian Taxation Office’s (ATO) Corporate Governance Framework.
Mr. Johns worked on key publicly disclosed transactions, including the $1 billion sale of the Motor Accident Commission for the SA Government; Tesla’s joint venture with the SA Government to put battery and solar technology in SA Housing Trust Homes; tax support for Santos of the ConocoPhillips USD 1+ billion purchase price acquisition; the $60 million acquisition of two wind farms businesses for an Australian gas supplier; and the $30 million acquisition of two software companies for a Canadian-owned software group.
Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Johns spent three years with the Australian Taxation Office in South Australia, serving most recently as a Technical Director on the Tax Avoidance Taskforce created by the Australia Federal Government to combat multinational tax avoidance. He also served as the South Australian representative at national leadership meetings about the taskforce. The taskforce exceeded Government expectations, contributing an additional $32.7 billion in tax collected from large Australian and multinational companies.
Previously, Mr. Johns led PwC Adelaide’s outbound tax practice, where he established tax structures for clients looking to invest overseas, liaised with other advisors, clients’ auditors and Australian and overseas tax authorities. Mr. Johns jointly led PwC South Australia’s newly formed property business, providing accounting, tax structuring and tax advisory services to not-for-profit organisations, major property developers and local governments.
Mr. Johns earned a bachelor’s degree in commerce from the University of South Australia. He is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia and New Zealand.
