Mr. Thompson brings more than twelve years of experience and has primarily focused on advising clients in the real estate industry. He brings deep expertise in serving many sectors of the real estate industry, including homebuilding, hospitality, retail, industrial, commercial, residential and mixed-use. Mr. Thompson has worked on assignments involving transactional due diligence, structural planning and analysis, the identification of U.S. federal income tax issues and general compliance related to U.S. federal and state tax laws. He also has significant experience related to tax restructuring issues, individual income taxation, trust taxation and international taxation. His restructuring experience includes the provision of tax advisory services to debtor taxpayers in connection with the restructuring of billions of dollars of debt. He possesses in depth technical knowledge pertaining to cancellation of indebtedness income (COD) issues and strategies related to the efficient preservation / usage of tax attributes (i.e. NOL’s).
Mr. Thompson earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration, with a concentration in accounting, cum laude, and a master’s degree in accounting from the University of Georgia. He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in the state of Georgia. Mr. Thompson is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and the Georgia Society of Certified Public Accountants. He is also an active member of several real estate industry related groups, including the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties (NAIOP) and the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts (NAREIT). As a member of NAREIT, Mr. Thompson is a participating member of the Federal Tax Sub-Committee, the REIT Savings Task Force, the REIT Distressed Debt Task Force and the REIT COD Task Force.
