Marcelo Saenz is a Senior Director with Alvarez & Marsal INFRA in Houston. He is part of the Power Market Analytics group within the energy sector, focused primarily on leading the modeling function and price forecasting.

Mr. Saenz has more than 24 years of experience advising utilities, developers, investors, and financial institutions across the US, Canada, and Mexico on power market dynamics, asset transactions, and energy transition strategies. He specializes in commodity price forecasting, with deep expertise in modeling wholesale power markets, economics of renewable and thermal generation, energy transition, and resource planning. He has led power market outlooks and due diligence efforts supporting transactions and financings.

Mr. Saenz’s notable assignments include advising on Antin Infrastructure’s $930 million acquisition of Opdenergy, Ontario Power Generation’s $298 million purchase of 63 hydro assets in the US, and the financing of the award-winning 400MW Puerto Libertad Solar Photovoltaic Plant in Sonora, Mexico. Complementing his transaction work, he has led complex generation planning engagements, including modeling 36 scenarios for the 2019 Puerto Rico Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), a landmark plan to decarbonize the generation fleet while strengthening transmission reliability on the island. He also supported a Midwest utility’s strategic planning efforts for seven years through multiple scenario simulations of the US markets.

Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Saenz led the market analysis and forecasting for AFRY Management Consulting in the US, overseeing all power market outlooks. Before that, he spent seven years with Siemens PTI, delivering IRPs and advising clients entering Mexico’s deregulated power market.

Mr. Saenz earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Universidad de Los Andes in Bogotá, Colombia, and a master’s degree in economics from West Virginia University. He is a native Spanish speaker and fluent in English.
