For more than 13 years, he has worked exclusively in distressed situations and transactions, including in-and-out of court restructurings, operational turnarounds, asset sales and refinancing transactions.
Mr. Schmaltz has worked with clients across a wide range of industries, including energy, mining, publishing, media, sports and entertainment, auto and aerospace manufacturing, transportation, retail, pharmaceuticals, and banking and financial services.
He most recently served as restructuring advisor to Swift Energy, which filed for chapter 11 protection on December 31, 2015 and confirmed its plan of reorganization within three months of its chapter 11 filing. Other notable clients at A&M have included Cengage Learning, The Tribune Company, Blockbuster, Murray Energy, Delphi Corp.’s Debtor-in-Possession lender group, and Graceway Pharmaceuticals.
Prior to joining A&M in 2007, Mr. Schmaltz spent over four years in the corporate and project workouts department of Prudential Capital Group, which manages over $70 billion of private debt, mezzanine and equity investments. There, he was responsible for maximizing recoveries of distressed portfolio loans and equity investments, underwriting additional investments in troubled companies, purchasing and selling distressed securities in the secondary market, negotiating amendments and restructurings, and monthly valuation of portfolio holdings.
Mr. Schmaltz earned a bachelor’s degree with concentrations in finance and accounting from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation and is a member of the CFA Society of Chicago, the American Bankruptcy Institute (ABI) and the Turnaround Management Association (TMA).
