James Holley is a Managing Director with Alvarez & Marsal Restructuring & Turnaround in London.

With 17 years of experience, Mr. Holley has led complex international restructurings across a wide variety of sectors including energy, retail, real estate, mining, technology, and financial services. As a qualified insolvency practitioner and a trusted advisor, he assists management teams and stakeholders in navigating financial and operational challenges with speed and precision.

Mr. Holley coordinates A&M’s European Restructuring Plan (RP) mandates. He draws on deep expertise and experience having supported some of the most significant RPs to date, including: Petrofac, acting for opposing creditors to successfully challenge the UK RP—only the second example of an RP being overturned at the Court of Appeal and one of the most important judgments to date; McDermott, supporting the debtor to implement interconnected UK and Dutch RPs with Chapter 15 recognition—the first example of these processes being used in parallel; and Virgin Active, supporting the secured lenders with negotiations and implementation—the first example of an RP reshaping lease obligations.

Mr. Holley’s other notable engagements include Royal IHC, supporting the debtor to implement a Dutch RP; Cimolai, acting for certain lenders to negotiate interconnected UK and Italian RPs; and Atento, supporting the debtor to implement two interconnected UK RPs. He has also worked on various confidential situations where RP preparation has been used to support consensual out-of-court restructurings.

Earlier in his career, Mr. Holley completed secondments with Lone Star Funds and Cerberus Capital Management, where he prepared investment strategies for €9 billion of distressed loan portfolios, as well as De Beers, where he was Project Lead for a global group simplification culminating in the biggest M&A project in its 125-year history.

Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Holley spent eight years at PwC working with major clients including Lehman Brothers, African Bank, Phones 4u, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. He also led the receivership of OW Bunker, the world’s largest fuel bunker group at the time of its collapse.

Mr. Holley earned a bachelor’s degree from Brunel University of London.
