Fernando Kurayama is a Managing Director with Alvarez & Marsal's Tax practice in São Paulo. With more than 18 years of experience, Mr. Kurayama has broad expertise in tax matters related to restructuring, turnaround and transactions.

Mr. Kurayama’s experience embraces projects associated with tax supply chain redesign, recovering taxes, inbound and outbound transactions, negotiation with local governments for applying tax benefits, implementation of ERP or tax solution. He specializes in advising Brazilian and international companies on indirect tax matters, helping companies manage the complexities of multi-country value-added tax (VAT) and creating effective processes and technology solutions.

Mr. Kurayama has extensive experience supporting corporate tax functions and helping corporations improve their existing processes. He has worked with clients in various industries, including technology, retail, automotive, agriculture, fashion, media, chemical and pharmaceutical.

Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Kurayama worked with AT&T Group, managing tax planning activities to support business operations in South America for companies including SKY Brazil Pay TV, DIRECTV LATAM and AT&T South America. While there, he brought more than $200 million in tax savings, increasing EBITDA and cash flow availability.

Previously, Mr. Kurayama worked with EY’s Brazilian Indirect Tax practice for 12 years, progressing from trainee to Senior Manager. During this period, he spent two years with EY’s US VAT Practice in New York.

Mr. Kurayama earned a bachelor’s degree in law from Faculdades Metropolitanas Unidas (FMU), São Paulo. He is fluent in Portuguese and English and speaks Spanish at an intermediate level.
