Douglas Greer is a Managing Director with Alvarez & Marsal Insurance and Risk Advisory Services in New York. He specializes in advising organizations on financial, operational and strategic business issues.

With more than 20 years of business experience, Mr. Greer has advised clients on acquisitions, divestitures, operational turnarounds, business due diligence and balance sheet restructurings. He has advised senior lender groups, unsecured creditors, policyholder groups, private equity firms, and operating companies across a broad range of industries.

Mr. Greer’s notable engagements in the insurance sector include serving as Interim Chief Financial Officer for a managing general underwriter; advising the board and CEO of a specialty property and casualty (P&C) underwriter on its rating agency presentation; developing bottom-up financial projection models or budgets for carriers in the auto, homeowners, workers compensation and small commercial sectors; and evaluating strategic alternatives, including run off or strategic sale, for a division of a large P&C insurer.

Mr. Greer also has extensive experience in insurance restructuring matters, both in and out of court. He advised policyholders of a financial guaranty insurer during its rehabilitation process; assessed restructuring options for a wind and hail insurer of last resort; advised a consortium of health insurers on the runoff (in rehabilitation) of a long term care (LTC) insurer; valued a life settlements portfolio for the senior lenders to a distressed hedge fund; advised a large reinsurer regarding restructuring options for its LTC exposure; and advised the lenders to an underperforming life insurer through an amendment process.

Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Greer spent five years in the corporate finance and private equity industries, most recently as an investment professional focused on debt-for-control transactions. He also spent six years with a turnaround consulting firm in New York, where his experience included strategic advisory, restructuring (both in and out of Chapter 11), and operational turnaround assignments for companies in multiple industries.

Mr. Greer earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical and aerospace engineering from Cornell University and an MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. He has earned Certified Turnaround Professional (CTP) and Certified Insolvency and Restructuring Advisor (CIRA) designations.
