Byron Smyl is a Managing Director with Alvarez & Marsal’s Corporate Transformation Services practice in Miami.

Mr. Smyl, previously was a Managing Director with A&M’s North American Commercial Restructuring practice for 12 years, where he demonstrated the firm’s commitment to address complex transformation challenges facing clients. Mr. Syml advises leaders, management teams, boards, lenders and other stakeholders of both healthy and underperforming companies to uncover value and drive sustainable results across the enterprise.

Mr. Smyl supports global clients across a variety of industries, but specializes in the telecom, media and technology (TMT) market segment. He specializes reviewing P&Ls, income statements, balance sheets, corporate structures and governance, operational efficiencies, bottom line and top line impact and unlocking shareholder value. 

Most recently, Mr. Smyl has served as a financial advisor to the Official Unsecured Creditors Committee of Avaya, Inc.  where he provided advisory services to the committee on bankruptcy process, business plan review and structured negotiations. He also served as the financial advisor to NII Holdings, Inc. (formerly Nextel International) to provide Chapter 11 bankruptcy administration support and restructuring services to the headquarters in the U.S. as well as to the operations in Mexico and Brazil.  

His other notable roles included serving as: Managing Director of the Nigerian operations for one of the world’s largest helicopter service companies for the offshore oil and gas industry; Interim Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of a multinational HVAC components manufacturer; Interim CFO during the Chapter 11 bankruptcy of a global plastics injection molding company; Federal Chapter 11 Trustee for a retail flooring chain; and Financial Advisor to the lender group of a pallet leasing logistics company.

Mr. Smyl’s other telecommunications assignments included serving as: Managing Director of Innovative Communication Corporation (ICC), a communications company based throughout the Caribbean; Financial Advisor providing merger and integration services to a global satellite service provider; Federal Receiver of Trillion Partners, Inc., a national service provider of fixed wireless and fiber wide area networks; Financial Advisor to LightSquared, Inc., a leading satellite-based telecommunications company, during its Chapter 11 bankruptcy; Financial Advisor to the group of senior lenders to a satellite communications company; Financial Advisor to the acquirer of a U.S. national competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC); and Program Director for a Caribbean telecommunications provider process improvement project.

Prior to A&M, Mr. Smyl was a Managing Director at XRoads Solutions Group, LLC.  Previously, Mr. Smyl was with PricewaterhouseCoopers Financial Advisory Services, and NorthwesTel Inc., a member of BCE Inc., the largest telecommunications company in Canada.

Mr. Smyl earned a bachelor’s degree in finance / marketing from the University of Alberta and an MBA from Arizona State University. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst charter holder and has passed all parts of the CIRA exam. He is a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute, CFA Institute, American Insolvency and Restructuring Advisors and Turnaround Management Association.
