Mr. Smyl specializes in advising management teams, lenders and other stakeholders of healthy and underperforming companies requiring operational and financial transformation or turnaround inside or outside of formal Chapter 11 bankruptcy or other administrative procedures. He has served as a Chapter 11 Trustee and U.S. Federal Receiver, and has worked with international companies in Canada, Latin America, Africa, Micronesia and the Caribbean.
Most recently, Mr. Smyl served as strategic advisor to a regional incumbent local exchange carrier (ILEC) with operations in the United States, providing performance improvement, revenue enhancement and technology enhancement services. He also served as Financial Advisor to NII Holdings, Inc. (formerly Nextel International), providing Chapter 11 bankruptcy administration support and restructuring services to the headquarters in the U.S. as well as to the operations in Mexico and Brazil.
Mr. Smyl’s other telecommunications assignments included serving as: Managing Director of Innovative Communication Corporation (ICC), a communications company based throughout the Caribbean; Financial Advisor providing merger and integration services to a global satellite service provider; Federal Receiver of Trillion Partners, Inc., a national service provider of fixed wireless and fiber wide area networks; Financial Advisor to LightSquared, Inc., a leading satellite-based telecommunications company, during its Chapter 11 bankruptcy; Financial Advisor to the group of senior lenders to a satellite communications company; Financial Advisor to the acquirer of a U.S. national competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC); and Program Director for a Caribbean telecommunications provider process improvement project.
His other notable roles included serving as: Managing Director of the Nigerian operations for one of the world’s largest helicopter service companies for the offshore oil and gas industry; Interim Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of a multinational HVAC components manufacturer; Interim CFO during the Chapter 11 bankruptcy of a global plastics injection molding company; Federal Chapter 11 Trustee for a retail flooring chain; and Financial Advisor to the lender group of a pallet leasing logistics company.
Before joining A&M, Mr. Smyl was a Managing Director at XRoads Solutions Group, LLC.
Mr. Smyl earned a bachelor’s degree in finance / marketing from the University of Alberta and an MBA from Arizona State University. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst charterholder and has passed all parts of the CIRA exam. He is a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute, CFA Institute, American Insolvency and Restructuring Advisors and Turnaround Management Association.
