Ben Cairns is a Managing Director with Alvarez & Marsal Restructuring in London. He brings 16 years of experience in advising boards and other stakeholders and acting as officeholder in restructuring situations. His primary areas of concentration are helping clients evaluate options, as well as planning for and delivering financial restructuring solutions. Mr. Cairns has worked with clients across a range of industries, including retail / leisure, financial services (banking, insurance and investment management), real estate, mining, commodities, oil & gas and shipping.

Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Cairns spent 23 years with EY, where he most recently served as Partner in the Restructuring practice. He acted variously as leader of the Financial Services Restructuring team in the U.K. and Ireland and head of the Alternative Capital Providers client / market channel for EMEIA, driving the coordination of major pursuits across the region.

Mr. Cairns advises clients in consensual and non-consensual restructurings. While he has deep expertise as an appointment taker for banks and insurance companies in run-off, he has advised on several English company schemes of arrangement, as scheme administrator and where no scheme administrator is contemplated.

As well as advising U.K. based clients, Mr. Cairns has worked extensively in Germany, U.K. offshore jurisdictions and the Caribbean. Additionally, he has served in cross-border roles covering many other countries, including Netherlands, Luxembourg and Finland.

Mr. Cairns is a chartered accountant and an Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) licensed insolvency practitioner.

He sits on both the ICAEW Council, the senior oversight body of the Institute, and is the Chair of its Insolvency Technical Committee.
