Baglan Sultanbek is a Managing Director with Alvarez & Marsal's Restructuring practice in Dubai. Focusing on Eurasia, Mr. Sultanbek brings over 20 years of experience in strategy and performance improvement. His primary areas of concentration are transformation programs, operational and organizational improvement initiatives and capital projects productivity. 

Mr. Sultanbek has worked with privately owned, publicly listed and state-owned clients in various industries, including mining, metallurgy, oil and gas, and power generation. He has worked in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Russia, Sweden, Finland, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Papua New Guinea, South Africa, Zambia, Guinea and Mali.

Mr. Sultanbek's notable engagements include assisting large vertically integrated base metal production companies in Central Asia to identify production bottlenecks and develop profitability improvement plans in mining. In one case, there was a $100 million per annum EBITDA impact, and in another, $180+ million per annum EBITDA impact.  

Mr. Sultanbek also helped a major energy generator company in CIS transform its procurement function, leading to savings of over 20%. Previously, for a major copper mining company in Africa, he led the team that developed and implemented a portfolio of initiatives with annualized economic effect of over $150 million. Mr. Sultanbek also worked in Central Asia developing a corporate governance concept for managing state-owned companies, HR strategy for a state-owned oil and gas company, corporate strategy for a state-owned railway company, and business processes redesign recommendations for a government entity.

Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Sultanbek held project and leadership roles in consulting firms. He spent more than nine years with Partners in Performance, serving clients in heavy industrial sectors in CIS, the Middle East and Africa. Previously, he worked with PwC for three years, building a management consulting team in Kazakhstan, and at McKinsey for five years, doing strategy and operations improvement work in Europe and CIS. His earlier experience includes working with Schlumberger and Ernst and Young. 

Mr. Sultanbek earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from the International Kazakh-Turkish University and a master’s degree in economics from the University of Arkansas where he received the Edmund Muskie Scholarship. A Kazakhstani national, Mr. Sultanbek is fluent in English, Russian and Kazakh.
