Alex Canale is a Senior Director with Alvarez & Marsal Disputes and Investigations in New York. He specializes in forensic accounting, including quantification of loss and valuations.

Mr. Canale provides financial and accounting analysis in damages calculations, bankruptcy related avoidance actions and investigates and assesses causes of action related to transactions and operating activities. He has assisted with the reconstruction and analysis of accounting records and financial statements subject to fraud. Mr. Canale has consulted in distressed and bankruptcy contexts across various industries, including energy, manufacturing, mining, mortgage origination, retail and telecommunications.

Recently, Mr. Canale’s engagements include supporting the financial advisor to the SunEdison Litigation Trust in facilitating claims, including avoidance actions relating to the company’s transactional activity; identifying the financial and operational risks and consequences associated with a hypothetical bankruptcy filing of a listed manufacturer with legacy asbestos liabilities; and assessing the solvency of a mortgage originator.

Previously, Mr. Canale analyzed damage claims made against a mortgage originator that sold residential mortgage loans that allegedly incurred losses; calculated the enterprise value of a sales and marketing agency to establish the value of collateral pledged to secured lenders; and assessed the solvency of a clothing retailer with revenue of $2.5+ billion during a dividend recapitalization transaction.

Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Canale was a Director at an advisory firm, working on some of Australia’s largest and most complex disputes and investigations, including the forensic investigation into the collapse of a listed Australian miner and steelmaker. He was the forensic accountant at the royal commission investigating trade union governance and corruption, and part of the team that conducted the strategic review of Australia’s National Broadband Network.

Mr. Canale earned a bachelor’s degree in commerce and law from the University of Adelaide and a master’s degree in applied finance from Kaplan Professional, Australia. He is a Certified Public Accountant, Chartered Accountant, Certified Distressed Business Valuer, Certified Insolvency and Restructuring Advisor, a Certified Fraud Examiner and has been designated as a business valuation specialist by Chartered Accountants of Australia and New Zealand.
