His primary areas of focus include the taxation of corporate insurers, tax considerations for insurance brokers, strategic insurance product development, and the tax and structuring aspects of alternative risk financing arrangements, with an emphasis on captive insurance companies.

With more than 33 years of public accounting experience, Mr. Phillips has held a range of leadership roles while serving organizations of all sizes, from global enterprises and Fortune 1000 companies to captive insurance entities.

Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Phillips spent more than 30 years within the Big Four, serving in leadership roles at both EY and KPMG. Most recently, he was EY’s Americas Markets Leader for Insurance Taxation, where he was responsible for driving top-line growth and advancing the firm’s insurance tax offerings.

Previously, Mr. Phillips served as Chief Operating Officer (COO) of EY’s Financial Services Organization Tax practice, overseeing key functions, including finance, human resources, branding and communications, marketing, deployment, and recruiting (both campus and experienced hires), and led the practice through the operational challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Driven by a strong passion for alternative risk and captive insurance markets, Mr. Phillips reestablished EY’s Captive Services Team and went on to hold a leadership role within the firm’s Global Captive Network. Earlier in his career, he served as the Business Unit Partner in charge of KPMG’s Mid-America Tax practice.

Mr. Phillips earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Southeastern Louisiana University, a master’s degree in taxation from DePaul University, and an MBA from The Ohio State University.
