Paul Matthews is a Senior Director with Alvarez & Marsal’s Disputes and Investigations practice in London. He brings over 18 years of experience in investigations, expert witness work and advising on corporate transactions, including a nine-month secondment to the Financial Services Authority where he was involved in Section 167 and 168 Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 investigations.

Mr. Matthews has diverse experience covering all aspects of forensic work and has worked with clients across a range of industries, including financial services, retail and oil and gas. He has undertaken assignments involving public and private UK and international companies, working on assignments throughout Europe, Asia and America.​

Most recently at A&M, Mr. Matthews assisted in the preparation of a claim by a private equity fund against its auditor. This involved advising on accounting and audit matters, reporting on various claim issues and preparing detailed analyses of the financial position of the fund. ​Previously, Mr. Matthews advised a wealthy individual with respect to a matrimonial dispute preparing a detailed factual report summarizing his financial history. Prior to that, he advised a client with respect to a post-closing dispute as to the adequacy of the Objection Notice, and the expert determination process. Mr. Matthews also led an investigation for an international company in relation to the misappropriation of customer funds. ​

Throughout his career, Mr. Matthews has been involved in many cases where he has conducted interviews in a variety of contexts (informal and formal). He has reviewed auditors’ work and due diligence processes and also undertaken internal controls reviews. He has also prepared a number of complex financial models. He has worked with regulatory bodies such as the FSA (now FCA), SFO, SEC, DoJ, the Crown Prosecution Service and the City of London Police.​

Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Matthews worked with AlixPartners Limited and CRA International (formerly Lee & Allen Consulting Limited).​

Mr. Matthews earned a law degree (with honours) from the University of Liverpool and completed the Bar Vocational Course at the Inns of Court School of Law, being called to the Bar in 1996. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales and a member of Lincoln’s Inn.​
