Sean Holmes

Mr. Holmes acts for companies, private equity clients, and financiers, solving liquidity and capital structure challenges for large, complex mining projects. Mr. Holmes has close to 20 years of professional experience in restructuring in Australia and the US and significant natural resources experience across a wide spectrum of commodities in private and listed markets. Mr. Holmes frequently takes executive roles and restructuring appointments in operating mining companies to provide strategic leadership and execute outcomes.
Mr. Holmes is well known in the resources industry for providing leadership in times of crisis and financial distress, managing the expectations of debtors and creditors during balance sheet reorganizations, managing divestments of distressed and illiquid assets, conducting operational reviews of distressed businesses, devising and implementing business turnaround strategies, and formulating debt restructuring plans. Mr. Holmes’s experience includes working with operating copper assets, operating gold assets in Australia and Africa, thermal and metallurgical coal mines, lithium and other battery metals, and bulk commodities, including iron ore.
Mr. Holmes is a Receiver and Manager of Griffin Coal, on behalf of a syndicate of foreign lenders owned $2.5 billion. It is funded by the State of Western Australia to maintain the production of coal to support the Western Australian energy market. Mr. Holmes works with unions, financiers, government, and industry organizations to deliver outcomes.
Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Holmes spent six years with Deloitte and 12 years with Ferrier Hodgson, including two years with Zolfo Cooper (now AlixPartners) in New York. Mr. Holmes served as the Western Australia Restructuring Lead Partner at Deloitte and co-led the Mining and Resources Restructuring practice in Australia.
Mr. Holmes earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting and taxation from Curtin University in Perth, as well as postgraduate qualifications in chartered accounting, insolvency, and corporate finance. Mr. Holmes is a professional member of the Australian Restructuring Insolvency & Turnaround Association (ARITA) and the Turnaround Management Association (TMA Australia).
