James Spencer

With more than 16 years of experience, Mr. Spencer is passionate about the impact that ESG can have on the allocation of capital and value creation for both companies and communities. Mr. Spencer specializes in pre-deal climate, human rights, and ESG due diligence for multi-asset class investors and broader advisory for corporate clients. This includes ESG or decarbonization strategy development, regulatory compliance (e.g., with the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive and Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, and the Australian Accounting Standards Board (AASB) S2 reporting standards), and technical climate risk assessment and scenario analysis.
Mr. Spencer has experience with private and public companies across various industries, including agriculture, manufacturing, transport, renewable energy, digital infrastructure, core infrastructure, construction, and insurance. Mr. Spencer’s notable assignments include working with companies on the issuance of sustainability debt financing, such as linked loans and green bonds, green loans, and sustainability/green finance frameworks.
Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Spencer spent several years working across pension funds in Melbourne, Australia, where he was responsible for integrating ESG into public and private market investment decision-making and undertaking ESG and climate research.
Mr. Spencer has represented leading Australian financial services industry bodies on ESG thought leadership, such as developing a climate change policy position for the Australian Banking Association and the Australian Sustainable Finance Institute’s inaugural “State of Sustainable Finance Report”.
Mr. Spencer earned a bachelor’s degree in law and a graduate certificate in sustainability strategy and circular economy. Mr. Spencer is also a graduate member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD).
