Stephen R. McKinney is a Senior Director with Alvarez & Marsal Tax in Dallas. A member of A&M’s Corporate Transformation Tax team, he specializes in federal income tax planning and strategic project implementation to help clients generate favorable cash results.

With 25+ years with Fortune 100 companies in the technology, media, and telecom industry, Mr. McKinney brings deep and practical knowledge of applying income tax methods to complex transactions. His recent noteworthy accomplishments include leading a team that designed and implemented a technology solution capable of measuring the performance of over one million network components to qualify them as current deductions, resulting in a cash tax benefit of $400+ million. Additionally, after a strategic corporate restructuring in response to the rapidly changing streaming industry that led to a financial statement impact of $3 billion, Mr. McKinney led a team that worked closely with executives in Production, Legal, and Finance to achieve $250+ million cash tax savings through careful execution and substantiation of the approximately 3,000 abandoned film projects.

Prior to joining A&M, Mr. McKinney was Vice President of Content Production at Warner Bros. Discovery, leading a team responsible for tax planning, compliance, and controversy for the company’s annual circa $10 billion worth of content production and licensing. His team also managed the consolidated reporting, accounting, forecasting, and monetization of the company’s annual circa $1 billion of production tax incentives.

Prior to that, Mr. McKinney was a Tax Executive at AT&T, leading on tax planning for the company’s annual circa $20 billion worth of wireline and wireless capital expenditures as well as supporting Corporate Real Estate’s monetization efforts in a tax-efficient manner. While at AT&T, he drove several large IRS controversy resolutions, including industry issue resolutions on depreciable lives and repairs, appeals settlements on Section 263A Capitalization, and technical advice memorandums on Section 165 Casualties.

Mr. McKinney earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting and management information services from the University of Incarnate Word, San Antonio, and an MPA in tax from the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin. He is a Certified Public Accountant.

Thought Leadership
As taxpayers near the end of income tax provision and tax return extension calculations, they may be thinking they have reached the end of the learning curve in terms of the impact of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA). While tax departments were busy developing new data sets and finding tools to assist with the calculations, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) was releasing new draft and revised forms. Taxpayers will be required to familiarize themselves with these forms to report the TCJA effects in the coming months.
