Alvarez & Marsal Expands Restructuring &Turnaround Practice in China with Senior Appointment

Shanghai – Leading global professional services firm Alvarez & Marsal (A&M) has bolstered its Restructuring & Turnaround practice in China with the appointment of Ben Hsiao as a Senior Director based in Shanghai. The appointment reflects A&M’s commitment to servicing the growing demand for corporate restructuring advisory in China amidst a challenging and fluctuating landscape.

Mr. Hsiao’s hire represents the next step in A&M’s strategic expansion of restructuring expertise in Asia in 2020, following on the appointments of Managing Directors Tiffany Wong, Eddie Middleton and Senior Director Kitty Yeung in Hong Kong, along with Managing Director Joshua Taylor and Senior Director Steffi Thio in Singapore.

With more than two decades of experience in commercial banking, Mr. Hsiao is recognized for his expertise in helping corporates manage non-performing loans and debt restructuring throughout China. Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Hsiao worked at Standard Chartered Bank for more than a decade and where he was Head of Group Special Assets Management in mainland China and Taiwan. While in that role, he was responsible for major debt restructuring projects including credit reviews, debt recovery and repayment settlements, litigation, bankruptcy, as well as amendments and construction of current and new facilities. Additionally, Mr. Hsiao has worked with many Chinese companies and has in-depth knowledge of the steel, automobile, coking coal and petrochemical sectors.

“Ben’s joining enhances our ability to support the accelerating need for advisory services around the management of non-performing loans and debt restructuring driven by the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Ron Thompson, Managing Director of A&M Asia and Head of Asia’s Restructuring &Turnaround Practice. “Ben’s experience will help strengthen our Shanghai team. His knowledge base will reinforce our seamless network of expertise in Asia and internationally and aligns with our leadership, action, results approach.”

“As industry leaders look for clear debt restructuring solutions and guidance, A&M’s current restructuring offering in China and throughout the region is unparalleled. I look forward to helping our clients navigate a clear pathway to maximizing value during these tumultuous times,” said Mr. Hsiao.
