Alvarez & Marsal Launches European Debt Advisory Practice

Tim Metzgen appointed to lead independent debt advisory offering throughout Europe.

London – Global professional services firm Alvarez & Marsal (“A&M”) has launched a Debt Advisory practice in Europe with the appointment of Tim Metzgen as a London-based Managing Director, to provide clients with independent advice on accessing and managing their interactions with the international debt markets.

The new Debt Advisory practice, initially a team of five led by Mr. Metzgen, will help companies source, negotiate and amend debt finance across an increasingly diverse and complex range of structures and markets. The team will work closely with restructuring and performance improvement professionals to support clients at every stage of the company lifecycle. A&M’s debt advisory offering will range from reviewing refinancing options to support growth strategies, through to helping borrowers manage their lenders in distressed situations when performance has failed to meet expectations.

Mr. Metzgen has over 20 years’ experience in banking and debt advisory. He joins from the debt advisory boutique, Marlborough Partners, where he served as head of the corporate advisory team. Prior to this, Mr. Metzgen served for 15 years as a senior director on the KPMG debt advisory team, as well as holding roles in the capital markets teams at RBC, JP Morgan and Barclays Capital. Throughout his career, Mr. Metzgen has advised more than 100 clients on successfully accessing the debt markets, including both listed and private equity-backed companies.

The Debt Advisory practice will work closely with the firm’s transformation, transactions, restructuring and private equity teams to offer complementary services and support to businesses to ensure the operational overlay of advice, as relevant to client needs. The launch forms part of A&M’s continued expansion of its European services and capabilities. The firm has grown to over 1,000 people across Europe this year.

Tim Metzgen, Managing Director at A&M, commented: “The international debt markets have become varied, opaque and fraught with conflicts. Helping borrowers to understand what credit providers want to achieve and how best to respond is becoming increasingly important.

“Our Debt Advisory offer will provide companies throughout Europe with independent, straightforward advice and practical solutions that are closely aligned to their business strategy. This is not just about enabling clients to access cheap funding. It’s also about ensuring that they have the right structure in place to achieve their operational goals.”

Richard Fleming, Managing Director and Head of European Restructuring at A&M commented: “In distressed situations, clients often need to review their funding options and require direct, conflict-free advice on the avenues open to them. The growth in private credit markets has added another layer of complexity to this process. Tim and his team plug a gap in our European Restructuring business that will help clients unlock value when they need it the most.”

Antonio “Tony” Alvarez III, Managing Director and A&M’s European Practice lead said: “Our business continues to evolve and develop, wherein we find our clients asking for our trusted advice both in good times and bad, across ever more complex challenges and objectives. The financial markets continue to proliferate seeing greater and greater investment into the corporate and private equity asset class. As an independent firm with an unrelenting commitment to senior-led advice, we are uniquely filling an important market gap. Tim is well known across the debt market as well as to many of our senior partners and clients who value his approach and professional track record.”
