Peter Urbanowicz

Prior to rejoining A&M, Mr. Urbanowicz served as Chief of Staff to Alex M. Azar II, Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). He functioned as the department’s Chief Operating Officer and was responsible for coordinating all HHS’ agencies and staff divisions. He was publicly credited for his vital role in the agency’s work to lower prescription drug prices, advance value-based care, and improve rural healthcare access. Mr. Urbanowicz also served as HHS Principal Deputy General Counsel during the administration of President George W. Bush where he was part of the team that drafted the historic legislation creating the Medicare Part D drug program and Medicare Advantage plans.
Before his appointment as HHS Chief of Staff, Mr. Urbanowicz was a Managing Director with A&M, focusing on performance improvement, financial turnaround and management advisory services. He created and led the healthcare regulatory and compliance practice. He also served as a federal monitor, independent review organization leader, and consulting expert for healthcare organizations under federal oversight or investigation. Mr. Urbanowicz has assisted private equity sponsors and lenders in assessing and managing their health care investments and portfolios.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Urbanowicz served as Executive VP, General Counsel and Secretary of Tenet Healthcare Corporation (NYSE: THC). Previously, he was a partner in the law firm of Locke, Liddell & Sapp LLP.
Mr. Urbanowicz earned a bachelor’s degree and a J.D. from Tulane University. He is an elected member of the American Law Institute and a member of the bars of the District of Columbia, the State of Louisiana and the United States Supreme Court. Mr. Urbanowicz has served on the board of directors for health care companies in many sectors, including acute care hospital services, home health, managed care, Medicare Advantage and pharmacy benefits service and administration.
