Alvarez & Marsal Hires Former Illinois State's Attorney Anita Alvarez as Managing Director in the Disputes and Investigations Practice
Anita Alvarez’s career in public service spans fighting corruption, financial fraud and violent crime
Chicago – Leading global professional services firm Alvarez & Marsal (A&M) announces the addition of Managing Director Anita Alvarez to its Disputes and Investigations practice in Chicago. She will leverage her experience and insights to help expand A&M’s Fiduciary Services offerings including serving as a court appointed monitor, receiver or examiner.
Ms. Alvarez, a renowned and accomplished jurist, brings more than 30 years of legal and consulting experience, including serving until recently as the Cook County State's Attorney, which encompasses Chicago. In her capacity as State’s Attorney, she managed the second largest prosecutor’s office in the nation with over 1,500 employees and an annual budget of approximately $100 million. Ms. Alvarez supervised the prosecution of all felony and misdemeanor cases as well as managed all legal and administrative activities.
During her tenure as the State’s Attorney, Ms. Alvarez created the Cook County Regional Organized Crime Task Force, a public-private partnership created to combat financial schemes such as fencing, identity theft, money laundering and bank fraud. This task force was the first of its kind in the nation and created a unique collaboration between law enforcement and retailers. Ms. Alvarez also established the Mortgage Fraud Investigations and Prosecution Unit in 2010 as a proactive unit to combat mortgage fraud.
She was also appointed by former Governor Pat Quinn to serve on the Illinois Reform Commission, which focused on anti-corruption and ethics in Illinois government. Ms. Alvarez was instrumental in drafting legislation that expanded public safety, including laws against human traffickers and for protecting children.
“Anita is an accomplished attorney and leader; her experience as a prosecutor, legal counselor and reformer demonstrates Alvarez & Marsal’s vision to recruit accomplished professionals to expand our offerings and services to our clients,” said Bryan Marsal, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of A&M.
Bryan Ruez, Managing Director and Global Leader of A&M’s Disputes and Investigations practice, added, “Anita’s wealth of legal knowledge and experience with complex investigations will expand the capabilities that A&M provides to our clients. Her appointment demonstrates our commitment to adding capabilities to address the market demands being placed on our clients. Anita was a sought-after candidate and we are pleased to welcome her to our team.”
Prior to joining A&M, Ms. Alvarez established a legal consulting business where she primarily advised clients on trial strategy in criminal matters. She frequently lectures on criminal law and served as an Adjunct Professor at John Marshall Law School in Chicago.
Ms. Alvarez earned her bachelor’s degree from Loyola University Chicago and her J.D. from Chicago-Kent College of Law. She sits on the Board of Regents for Loyola University Chicago and is a member of many associations; including The American College of Trial Lawyers, The Chicago Bar Association, Hispanic Lawyers of Illinois and the Women’s Bar of Illinois.
