Alex Lawson is a Managing Director with Alvarez & Marsal Restructuring and Insolvency in the Cayman Islands. He is Head of the Offshore Group and Head of the A&M Cayman Islands office.

Under Mr. Lawson’s leadership and since its launch, A&M in the Cayman Islands has become the market leader for complex, asset-heavy, and litigious restructurings. Beyond the Cayman Islands, Mr. Lawson has been appointed as provisional liquidator and liquidator in the British Virgin Islands by the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court. He has been recognized in the courts of the US, Norway, Dubai, Australia, and Hong Kong SAR, China.

Mr. Lawson’s notable assignments include his joint appointment at Luckin Coffee Inc., during which its share price increased fourfold and has increased 16-fold after restructuring. In addition, Mr. Lawson formed part of the A&M team appointed as a financial advisor to FTX Trading and was appointed official liquidator of VPC Impact Acquisition Holdings II (in official liquidation) and Farfetch Limited (in official liquidation).

Further, Mr. Lawson led the voluntary liquidation (appointed by the fund) of Marble Ridge Capital and successfully realized $600 million of portfolio assets at pre-appointment net asset values and settled highly contentious litigation within four months of appointment. He was also appointed to One Thousand & One Voices Africa LP, in which he successfully exited high-risk assets and skillfully navigated complicated litigation involving the existing general partner to achieve an optimal exit for limited partners within 12 months of appointment.

Mr. Lawson earned a bachelor’s degree in commerce and a bachelor’s degree in law from the University of Queensland. He is a qualified Insolvency Practitioner in the Cayman Islands, a Chartered Accountant (in Australia and New Zealand) with more than 20 years’ experience, and a member of the Cayman Islands Institute of Professional Accountants (CIIPA). He is also an admitted legal practitioner with the Supreme Court of Queensland, Australia, member of the Insolvency Practitioners Association of England and Wales with both a Certificate of Proficiency in Insolvency (CPI) and a Joint Insolvency Examination (JIE), and member of the International Federation of Restructuring, Insolvency and Bankruptcy Professionals (INSOL International), and the Cayman Islands Recovery and Insolvency Specialists Association (RISA) chapter. Mr. Lawson is recognized by Who’s Who Legal as an expert and global thought leader in restructuring and asset recovery fields.
