Investor Focus and ESG in Response to Climate Change

When it comes to climate change, many investors and shareholders of retail giants are becoming increasingly frustrated. This was the message that Costco shareholders expressed in January of this year when 70% of them voted to call on the company to set a strategy for eliminating carbon emissions from its value chain by 2050.

According to investor advocacy group Ceres, it was the first time for such a net-zero proposal to pass at any company. That's because shareholder resolutions in the U.S. aren’t legally binding. But companies that don’t abide by them risk losing control of their boards and the financial support of institutional investors, making them a powerful tool to alter corporate climate behavior. 

In a recent Quartz article, A&M Managing Director Julie McLaughlin was quoted about shareholder activism related to climate change. She comments on increased investor focus on ESG topics and trends regarding climate related shareholder resolutions.
