International Day of the Girl - Women in Tech

A&M supports International Day of the Girl, which focuses attention on the need to address the challenges girls face and to promote girls’ empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights. The theme of International Day of the Girl this year is the gender digital divide, and the focus is on encouraging and improving girls’ access to technology roles in the future. To celebrate this hugely important initiative, A&M has interviewed some of our female tech trailblazers to find out more about their career journeys and to get their advice to girls who are considering a future in technology.

Forensic Technology

What is your role at A&M?

I am a Manager within our FTECH team where I predominantly work on e-Discovery projects.

What is your favourite part of your job?

I enjoy the variety of projects we have at any one time, and the different clients we get to work with. It is nice to have that change through the day/ week where different projects and clients have varying requests and workflows.

What 3 things would you tell your 15-year-old self?

  1. Choose subjects you enjoy and don’t panic too much about the long-term implications of those choices, subjects chosen at school don’t determine your future as much as you think, and you are likely to do better in ones you like. You can look for a career that suits those aspects of your personality, and that you enjoy doing.
  2. Maintain hobbies and interests that you love, and go back to ones you have dropped, whenever you feel like it - they are so important for mental health and offer a refreshing break.
  3. Not everybody suits a short haircut – You, in particular, may end up looking a lot like Clare Balding!

Analyst
Data and Analytics

What is your role at A&M?

My role is all about making friends with data. Manage them, clean them, visualise them to tell the story of the business that is driven from data.

What is your favourite part of your job?

What I like the most is being technical in a business environment and always delivering fact-based output. Data is data and it is always there to support our business findings. Additionally, working in A&M allows me to apply my technical skills in many different sectors and enables me to see how data can be used in various areas to improve business.

What 3 things would you tell your 15-year-old self?

  1. Mathematics is super important and learn coding right now!
  2. Do things you want to do and don’t be afraid of failure - you will learn from it and become a better person.
  3. Fall in love early and don’t worry about breaking up!!!

Emma Watt
Associate
Cyber Risk Services

What is your role at A&M?

Working within the Cyber Risk team at A&M means my role can include many different tasks. I have been on projects where I have performed outside-in analyses which aim to identify a firm’s risk exposure on the internet, all the way to creating complete Cyber Security policy suites for organisations that wish to bolster their security posture.

What is your favourite part of your job?

My favourite part of my job is the problem solving we face every day. We need to look for things that clients may have missed or forgotten in terms of their Cyber posture and guide them on how to correct them - it’s a nice feeling to think we got there before an attacker.

What 3 things would you tell your 15-year-old self?

  1. Team sports teach you so many skills which are transferable in the workplace, don’t give up and go to that next training session!
  2. Don’t always follow what you think is best for your career, follow what you love, and success will follow.
  3. Travel whenever presented the opportunity.

Graduate Analyst
Cyber Risk Services

What is your role at A&M?

I am a graduate analyst working in Cyber Risk Services at A&M.
My role involves providing support on cyber due diligence projects. Recently, I have been delving into Open-Source Intelligence.

What is your favourite part of your job?

My favourite aspect of my job is the constant learning and development I am exposed to. With security vulnerabilities and threats rising exponentially every day, it is a must to keep ahead of the curve. This means there is never a dull day as I am always learning new things and keeping up with trends. Additionally, being a part of the rotational graduate scheme allows for training in a variety of tech fields which I haven’t had the chance to explore thus far such as: forensics, eDiscovery and privacy.

What 3 things would you tell your 15-year-old self?

  1. Failure is not always the opposite of success, but a part of it. Although you may face setbacks and difficulties, make sure you learn from them and use them to improve and become the best version of yourself.
  2. It is okay to look a bit different to everyone in your computer science class. You will hopefully be an inspiration to other girls pursuing tech, the same way those in the year above were to you.
  3. Stop complaining about waking up way too early for school (as it only gets worse!).

I work within the Cyber Security team that helps clients understand their Cyber Security maturity posture, manage risks and ultimately build value within their business.

What is your favourite part of your job?

The dynamic threat landscape, continuously evolving technologies (security defence and attack), and the variety of people I interact with every single day!

I have a passion for data and technology and seeing it ‘work’ for the business. My role places me in the middle of people and technology, and seeing how the two can best interact to secure and grow a business.

What 3 things would you tell your 15-year-old self?

  1. You won’t know unless you try, Give it a Go!
  2. Do what YOU love and because YOU want to, not because someone told you to.
  3. Hanging from a pole every day doesn’t stretch you out and make you taller! (still keeping hopes of a slam dunk alive!).
