A&M is committed to reducing the environmental impact of our business activities. We seek to do this through a culture of continuous improvement where every employee feels responsible for the resources they use and the activities they undertake on behalf of our business.

Environmental Policy

As a business:

  • We will adhere both to the spirit and the letter of laws and regulations covering the environment
  • We seek to reduce the environmental impact of our own business operations and activities, paying attention to:
    • Minimizing waste and seeking to recover, re-use and recycle material resources where appropriate, rather than disposing of them
    • Using economic and environmentally friendly business travel arrangements where appropriate
    • Operating our premises in an efficient and effective manner, including the efficient use of energy and water resources in particular
    • Preventing or minimizing pollution
  • We will communicate our environmental policy to all employees
    • Educate our employees, contractors and other stakeholders on how to better understand their own impacts and how to reduce them
    • Understand our own baseline environmental impacts and develop a long-term plan to reduce or eliminate them
    • Locate our offices near regional transportation hubs to encourage public transit or other low/no emissions sources of commuter travel
    • Reduce travel to internal meetings by replacing with web-based meetings where possible
    • Coordinate with clients to reduce in-person meetings by replacing with web-based meetings, particularly for routine matters
    • Educate our new employees on our policy as part of the on-boarding process
    • Support the formation of location-based Green Teams at our larger regional offices to drive employee awareness, engagement and tangible reductions in our environmental impact

In summary, our clients, employees and other stakeholders expect that we do our part to care for the environment. Our policy is just one step in our ESG journey, and we expect to measure, report and transparently share more information to showcase the depth of our commitment to this important topic.

Net Zero Commitment

Decarbonization is a growing emphasis of society as well as global governments, organizations and individuals, Alvarez & Marsal is committed to achieving Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 across our Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions.

We seek to eliminate direct and indirect greenhouse emissions at our offices over time (Scope 1 and 2 emissions). We also will work with our travel providers and others to lower indirect emissions in our value chain (Scope 3), which are largely associated with business travel for client work – necessary activities as we deliver on the core mission of our business.

In recent years, we have implemented a number of measures that benefit society, our stakeholder objectives and our business, including:

  • Reduced client travel while growing our business
  • Increased telecommuting and hybrid work methods for our global employee base
  • Expanded recycling options for solid waste disposal
  • Lowered use of single-use items and disposables through the encouragement of reusable items
  • Committed to establish near-term and long-term Net Zero targets with the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi)
  • Conducted a global Employee Commuting Survey to improve data quality of our Scope 3, Category 7 emissions

Looking ahead, we plan to expand on these activities by conducting the following activities, including :

  • Seek validation of our near-term GHG emissions targets from SBTi
  • Leverage strategic energy efficiency plans and emissions reduction activities with our offices around the globe
  • Reducing our energy by leveraging lighting efficiencies such as LED lights and control systems
  • Optimizing business travel to accommodate client needs while reducing our largest source of emissions
  • Engaging employees at all levels on our path towards Net Zero to pursue individual steps in support of the initiative, such as alternate commute options
  • Increasing renewable energy use in our offices
  • Creating relationships with hotels, airlines and car services with Net Zero commitments of their own
  • Using office lease renewal periods as opportunities to incorporate improved environmental practices
  • Exploring the consolidation of office space over time
  • Pursuing additional business with third-party organizations committed to a Net Zero path
  • Increasing procurement of office supplies from local and sustainably sourced suppliers
  • Supporting the growth and involvement of A&M Green Teams throughout A&M’s global operations

Our global baseline emission footprint:

  1. For our most recent carbon calculations, we have shifted to a Calendar Year methodology (from Fiscal Year).
  2. Scope 3 estimate method used, categories not delineated.

Our Green Team - Leadership. Action. Sustainable Results

The Green Team is an employee grassroot effort to make a positive environmental change within A&M.

Green Teams are made up of employees committed to working on sustainability initiatives in local A&M offices. Teams strive to carry out A&M's values through environmental work by strengthening our local communities and building sustainability knowledge capital. When Green Teams were launched in July 2021, team members had a shared purpose of increasing employee engagement and creating an outlet for personal passion to intersect with A&M's mission.

Green Teams currently span across multiple cities across the globe, and team members are actively working to improve and expand the initiative. Teams are encouraged to implement initiatives that are the most relevant to each local office. Some recent initiatives have been conducting employee commuting surveys to understand office carbon footprints, local park clean ups, clothing drives, tree plantings and touring local recycling plants. Most initiatives facilitated by teams fall under one of the following environmental themes:

  • Sustainable Transportation
  • Waste Management
  • Energy Use
  • Sustainable Procurement
  • Sustainable Lifestyles
