Dr. Christopher Dielmann will support governments in distress from Latin America and the Caribbean to Africa and Asia

London, 2 May 2023 – Leading global professional services firm Alvarez & Marsal (A&M) has bolstered its Sovereign Advisory Service practice (SAS) with the appointment of Dr. Christopher Dielmann as Senior Director.

Dr. Dielmann joins from the World Bank, where he was a Senior Economist in its Global Macro and Debt unit. In this role, he led the World Bank’s analysis on debt vulnerabilities in developing countries, the integration of climate change into the Debt Sustainability Framework (DSF), served as a representative to the Paris Club, and was the restructuring lead for Sri Lanka and Ghana.

Dr. Dielmann previously worked in the Debt Policy Division of the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) Strategy, Policy and Review Department. where he was the lead analyst for the IMF’s debt sustainability analysis.

Based in Washington D.C., Dr. Dielmann will advise sovereigns in debt distress, engaging with governments, central banks, state-owned enterprises, sovereign wealth funds, international organizations, and the private sector. He will report to A&M Managing Director and Global Practice Leader for Sovereign Advisory Services, Dr. Reza Baqir, formerly Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan.

Dr. Dielmann said, “Today, more than 50 countries are facing some form of debt distress, either through defaults, loss of market access, or being considered at high risk. Governments across the Americas, Africa and Asia are struggling to finance themselves sustainably as a result of high interest rates and inflation. Dr. Baqir said, “I am very excited to welcome Chris on board and to work with him again after our time together in the IMF’s Debt Policy Division. Chris’ experience with debt sustainability analysis and sovereign debt restructurings will be vital to this mission.”

Dr. Dielmann earned a doctorate from the department of international economics at The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), where he was advised by Jaime Marquez (former Senior Federal Reserve and FOMC official), John Lipsky (former First Deputy Managing Director of the IMF), and Lee Buchheit (attorney and sovereign debt expert). He is a CFA and CAIA charter holder, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and an Adjunct Professor of Economics & Sustainable Finance.
