London – Leading global professional services firm Alvarez & Marsal (A&M), today announces the appointment of David Lawton as a Managing Director and co-head of its UK Regulatory Advisory practice, based in London. Mr Lawton joins from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) where he was Director of the Markets Policy and International Division. 

 

This appointment is the latest in a series of senior hires for A&M’s UK regulatory team, in response to increased demand for specialist advisory services from financial services clients’ need to fundamentally transform their business models in response to regulatory requirements. 

 

Mr Lawton will join Paul Sharma, co-head of A&M’s UK Regulatory Advisory practice and former Deputy Head of the Prudential Regulatory Authority (PRA), Jeremy Heales, a Managing Director in the same practice and former Head of Retail Banks at the FCA, and Cyrus Ardalan, a Senior Advisor and Chairman of A&M’s Financial Industry Advisory Services Advisory Board and former Vice Chairman of Barclays.

Paul Sharma said: “David’s experience over three decades, including senior leadership roles at the Financial Conduct Authority, the European Securities and Markets Authority and HM Treasury, equip him extremely well to help our clients in the UK and EU to meet the challenge of more intense markets and conduct regulation now coming from UK and EU regulators.”

Mr Lawton’s 30 years’ experience spans the FCA, the Financial Services Authority (the predecessor body to the FCA) and HM Treasury. His previous roles include Director of Markets and most recently Director of Markets Policy and International, in which he was responsible for the FCA’s markets and wholesale conduct policy. He also led the FCA’s European and International strategy, chairing several prominent international committees and representing the FCA at the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) Board of Supervisors.

 

Prior to joining the FSA, Mr Lawton spent nearly two decades at HM Treasury, latterly as Head of Capital Markets and Governance.
