Where Guidance Meets Grit: Keya’s Path from Intern to Impact

Keya Fowler is an Associate with Alvarez & Marsal’s Global Transaction Advisory Group (TAG) in Chicago, Illinois. She earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in accounting from Butler University.

In this Q&A, Keya shares why she chose A&M, the collaborative culture of the Chicago office, and the mentorship that shaped her growth.

Why Did You Choose to Join Alvarez & Marsal?

Reflecting on your early career, what made A&M stand out from other opportunities?

What stood out most about A&M was the culture and personal connection. A leader within the organization first reached out to me during my third year of college, and from our first coffee chat through graduation, she stayed invested in my journey. This wasn’t something I had experienced at other firms.

Learning from Senior Leaders

Who have been some of your most impactful mentors at A&M, and what have you learned from them?

I have worked closely with senior associates and managers on projects many. Each of them has played a key role in my development over the past year.

What I’ve appreciated is how approachable and generous they are with their time, whether it’s walking me through a complex task or sharing an Excel shortcut that makes my work more efficient. Their support has helped me grow and made me feel more confident and connected with the team.

A&M Chicago Office Culture and Sense of Belonging

How would you describe the culture of your local office or team?

II’m based in the Chicago office, which is home to many business units and creates opportunities to connect across teams. From Lunch & Learns to Giving Back events, the culture is supportive and people are focused on helping each other succeed.

Living A&M’s Core Values: Quality in Action

How does A&M’s core value of Quality resonate with you, and how have you seen it reflected in your work or team culture?

From my very first deal, I saw how much emphasis A&M places on delivering work that is not only accurate but also insightful and actionable. Those I have worked closely with always take the time to walk through each analysis, challenging us to think critically, and anticipate client questions. That rigor consistently raises the quality of work we deliver to clients. There is a culture of accountability and pride in delivering work that clients can trust to make big decisions. It makes the work more rewarding.

Adventures Outside A&M

What’s a fun fact most people don’t know about you?

I once went skydiving! I’ve always had the adventure bug, and saying yes to that jump the summer before finishing my master’s was unforgettable. It pushed me out of my comfort zone, and I’d recommend it to anyone considering it.
