Richard Mu is a Managing Director with Alvarez & Marsal Performance Improvement in Shanghai.

Mr. Mu has over 25 years of operational experience in manufacturing, sales, R&D, and transformation management, focusing on performance improvement, process excellence, leadership coaching, and operational turnaround. He has worked across diverse industries, including the telecommunications, energy, automotive, aerospace, machinery of manufacturing, and service sectors. 
Mr. Mu’s notable assignments have included helping a German automotive original equipment manufacturer (OEM) improve productivity and efficiency KPIs to enhance its competitiveness in the Chinese market; supporting a leading aerospace manufacture to optimize internal logistics and set up a daily management system, shorten delivery time, and improve product quality; and helping a local oil and gas equipment provider build a continuous improvement system, accomplishing cost reduction and quality improvement and optimizing manufacturing lead time.

Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Mu was Vice President with Farasis Energy’s Manufacturing practice, where he supervised the group’s manufacturing system and managed four plants and 5,000+ staff in electric vehicle car battery production to fulfill 20 gigawatt-hours of automotive OEM customer delivery worldwide. Before that, he spent six years as General Manager with Staufen in Shanghai, where he developed business in the region to help clients improve their operations performance across various industries, including automotive, mechanical engineering, aerospace, energy, and electronics. 

Before joining Staufen, Mr. Mu acted as Asia Lean Leader for GE Renewable Energy, supporting seven plants to achieve continuous improvement in the region to optimize business process, production efficiency, quality improvement, and delivery performances. Mr. Mu also spent three years with Capgemini, a global leader in consulting, where he advised clients in China on strategy development, organization optimization, and process improvement. Before that, he served 10 years in the telecommunications industry at Alcatel-Lucent in production engineering and performance improvement.

Mr. Mu earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Tsingtao University and a master’s degree in telecommunication electronics from Ocean University of China. He is fluent in both Mandarin and English.
