David S. McLaughlin is a Senior Director with Alvarez & Marsal Restructuring & Turnaround in Chicago. Bringing more than 20 years of restructuring experience, he specializes in the healthcare industry.

Mr. McLaughlin provides both financial advisory and interim management services. His areas of focus include debtor and creditor restructurings, especially building cash flows and creating business plan projections for in-court and out-of-court restructurings.

One of Mr. McLaughlin’s most notable engagements at A&M involved working on behalf of the private equity sponsor of the largest owner of freestanding emergency departments and hospital outpatient emergency departments in the US. He led the Finance department, enabling A&M to stabilize the business by reducing total loss from $102 million in 2018 to pro forma $12 million pre-COVID-19. He then helped transition into asset preservation once market forces rendered the business nonviable.

Further representative examples of Mr. McLaughlin’s assignments include: providing financial guidance to the private equity owners of a distressed portfolio of several dozen dental practices; leading the Finance department of two different radiopharmaceutical businesses over a two-year period, with responsibility for creating and maintaining cash-flow reports and financial models for the entities’ multiple sales processes; participating in an interim management team during the Chapter 11 process and subsequent sale of a cardiac laboratory business; serving as an engagement lead during the Chapter 11 process, debt restructuring, and sale of a large Texas-based senior living organization; acting as interim controller of an Illinois hospital during its Chapter 11 process and overseeing the sale of multiple business units; serving in the interim management team of a large Maryland-based continuing care retirement community during its Chapter 11 process and subsequent 363 asset sale; and providing debt advice to a $1 billion hospital and healthcare services system during its Chapter 11 process.

Prior to joining A&M, Mr. McLaughlin worked in Huron Consulting Group’s Restructuring practice.

Mr. McLaughlin earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan and an MBA from the University of Illinois. He is a Certified Insolvency and Restructuring Advisor (CIRA) and a member of the Turnaround Management Association.
