Carsten Heide
Mr. Heide has specialized in strategy, operations, and technology across the resources sector for over 25 years. He has worked for clients in the Americas, the EU, the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Middle East, and the Asia–Pacific region.
Mr. Heide’s notable mining, processing, and smelting experience includes work with ArcelorMittal, Barrick Gold, BHP, Boliden, Cargill, Centerra Gold, Glencore, KGHM, Kinross Gold Corporation, Newmont, Nyrstar, Rio Tinto, Sherritt, South 32, Teck Resources, Torex Gold, and Vale, among others.
Mr. Heide has led nearly a dozen operational turnarounds across the mining sector. In one underground base-metal mine, he partnered with the client to boost production by more than 70%, overhauling the entire management operating system from mine planning and geology to finance and day-to-day operations. At a remote Arctic site, he restructured the budgeting and life-of-mine planning systems, increasing asset value by over $300 million and significantly improving financial forecasting.
Mr. Heide has also delivered multiple major project rescues. For example, he turned around a $2-billion capital project by improving construction productivity by approximately 250%, bringing the critical path back on schedule, and reducing the projected cost overrun by $280 million. In addition, he has transformed more than a dozen mining capital management programs, identifying opportunities to increase project net present value (NPV) by several hundred million dollars each. His work has included right-sizing and re-scoping projects, evaluating alternative processing flow sheets and life-of-mine plans, and managing financial and operational project performance, throughout the stage-gate process in collaboration with owners’ teams and EPCM partners.
Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Heide worked as the Head of Global Mining for Partners in Performance and as a consultant at Boston Consulting Group. He previously served as a Director at the Energy & Environmental Research Center, where he had profit and loss responsibility for technology commercialization and investment activities.
Mr. Heide earned a PhD in physics from the University of Oxford. He is fluent in English, German, and Russian.
