Maximilien Barbu is a Managing Director with Alvarez & Marsal Private Equity Performance Improvement in Zürich. He brings more than 15 years of hands-on experience leading high-impact value creation programs, operational turnarounds, and carve-outs for private equity–backed portfolio companies and corporates. He partners closely with management teams, boards, and shareholders to define and execute business and technology strategies as well as operating models that deliver measurable, sustainable performance improvement.

Mr. Barbu serves as the on-the-ground lead for A&M on the carve-out of a European healthcare provider, overseeing separation planning and execution and supporting sell-side due diligence across commercial, financial, and tax workstreams.

Previously, Mr. Barbu was the on-the-ground lead for an enterprise-wide transformation of a US-listed company, reporting directly to the CEO. The program included the design and implementation of a new operating model and organizational structure, global workforce reduction, manufacturing and distribution footprint rationalization, product portfolio refocusing, and strategic sourcing optimization.

In other notable roles, Mr. Barbu held senior transformation positions at Tier 1 private equity–backed industrial and aviation services businesses, where he drove value creation through revenue growth initiatives and large-scale cost-reduction efforts. He helped deliver a €1-billion EBITDA value creation program at an industrial group with €8 billion in revenue and led the Transformation Office of a €3-billion-revenue aviation services business targeting €183 million of EBITDA uplift. Earlier in his career, Mr. Barbu held several interim finance leadership roles, supporting businesses facing controlling, liquidity, and cash management challenges.

Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Barbu spent five years at EY, beginning his career in Audit where he qualified as a Chartered Accountant, before moving into Transaction Advisory Services. In this role, he advised FTSE 100 companies on sustainable cash and working capital improvement initiatives.

Mr. Barbu earned a master’s degree in finance from Cass Business School and is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW). A French national, he is fluent in French and English and proficient in German.
