Sofia Tome is a Human Resources Operations Specialist in Alvarez & Marsal’s Human Resources (HR) Operations team in New York, New York. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Fordham University, majoring in global business.

Reflecting on your college experience, what unexpected lessons or insights have you gained that have significantly impacted your career?
I was fortunate to attend Fordham University in Manhattan, New York. The experience was more than education; it was a journey of personal growth. Living in Manhattan has been a transformative experience, sharpening my resilience in ways I never imagined. Being surrounded by the city's vibrant culture and diverse people has taught me how to connect with others from all walks of life, which has been incredibly valuable in my professional interactions. The constant energy and stimulation of the city have sparked my creativity and problem-solving skills, allowing me to tackle challenges innovatively. Overall, my time in Manhattan has shaped me and equipped me with unique skills and perspectives that I bring to my career.
Why did you choose to intern at A&M?
HR wasn't initially on my career radar, but when a friend mentioned an internship opening, I saw an opportunity worth exploring. At that point in my academic journey, my interests in business and psychology were apparent, yet the path forward remained cloudy. As I researched A&M, its values resonated with me, making me feel it would be a perfect fit.
What motivated your decision to join A&M full-time?
From the moment I joined, A&M felt like the perfect fit. Immersed in work I loved, my team embraced and encouraged me every step of the way. Surrounded by inspiring colleagues, I've been continuously motivated to expand my career and knowledge from the start of my internship to the present day. What truly energized me was the core belief that lifelong learning and growth are never-ending pursuits, and witnessing the unwavering passion that everyone brought to their work was truly inspiring.
Which office are you based in, and how would you describe the office culture?
I’m in the New York office. The culture is a blend of ambition and collaboration. When I walk into the office, coffee in hand, I can feel the determination that collectively drives us forward.
Essential Skills for Budding Consultants to Succeed and Navigate Early Career Challenges
Reflecting on your career's early stages, what unexpected challenges did you encounter, and how did you navigate them to emerge stronger?
In the early stages of my career, I faced numerous family tragedies that deeply impacted me. However, the unwavering support from my colleagues, particularly my supervisors, became my guiding light. Their encouragement lifted my spirits and instilled in me the confidence to persevere and excel in my role at A&M. I proved that despite any challenges, my dedication to my work remained unwavering, and my commitment to delivering quality results remained just as strong.
How do you stay updated on industry trends and developments, and what resources do you rely on for continuous learning and growth?
I actively participate in industry publications and online forums to stay informed about industry trends, focusing on resources like SHRM. I am pursuing certification further to deepen my knowledge and expertise in the field. Moreover, I place great importance on mentorship, as it has exposed me to new perspectives and challenged my thinking in ways I hadn't considered before.
What crucial skills or qualities do you believe students should prioritize developing to thrive in the consulting industry, and how can they best prepare themselves?
To excel in consulting, students must prioritize honing analytical, communication and adaptability skills. They empower consultants to solve complex problems, communicate effectively and thrive in dynamic environments. To prepare, students should engage in practical experiences, seek mentorship and supplement their education by immersing themselves in real-time situations.
Looking back, what advice would you offer recent graduates about effectively transitioning from academia to the professional world?
My advice for recent graduates transitioning from academia to the professional world is simple: focus on networking, continuous learning and adaptability. These three focuses will help you thrive in any work environment.
What personal attributes or traits are essential for success in your field, and how do you continually nurture and develop these qualities within yourself?
Success in HR relies on empathy, strategic thinking, and good communication. To improve in these areas, I focus on listening well, understanding people's needs, and learning about HR trends beyond just A&M. I also work on thinking ahead and aligning HR with the organization's goals. I will continue to challenge myself and remain open to growth.
Fostering Professional Relationships and Personal Fulfillment Effectively
How do you approach networking and building professional relationships, and what tips would you offer to others just starting?
My approach to networking and building long-lasting professional relationships is to be authentic. When you are authentically yourself, you end up where you belong. The advice I would give to others is to don’t be afraid to ask questions, don’t be scared to ask someone for conversations over coffee and don’t be afraid to speak up. You will be inspired by those around you, and you will always miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take.
What's your favorite hobby or activity outside of work, and how did you get into it?
My favorite activity outside work is attending SoulCycle classes. It all began during my sophomore year of college when we were collectively navigating the lingering effects of the pandemic. I recall my first class, held outdoors in Hudson Yards, at sunset—an experience that instantly captivated me. Since that moment, I've found myself irresistibly drawn to the exhilarating atmosphere of SoulCycle. With motivational instructors and energetic music playlists that ignite the soul and a vibrant sense of community, each session leaves me physically and mentally rejuvenated. SoulCycle continues to guide me on a transformative journey toward holistic well-being through its unwavering emphasis on the mind-body connection.
What’s something on your bucket list that you hope to accomplish in the next five years?
Amidst my mother's courageous battle with cancer this year, we've embarked on a shared mission: to tick off as many destinations from our bucket list as possible. Travel represents an opportunity to dive headfirst into diverse cultures and soak in our world's wonders. Each journey is a soul-stirring experience, expanding my perspective and filling my heart with joy.
