Paul Sommer

Mr. Sommer has held senior executive roles at larger buyouts and mid-sized companies, always with a focus on deep transformational programs. He has worked in multiple sectors including energy and information technology but has a focus on diversified industrials.
Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Sommer served as CTO for a BainCapital-backed portfolio company with ~€1 billion revenue and ~5,000 employees. As a member of the Executive Committee, he led a holistic value creation program that included Target Operating Model design and implementation, business process harmonization, SG&A cost-out and workforce reduction programs. He was also in charge of the Mechanical Packages business unit.
Previously, Mr. Sommer served as Operating Partner for a pan-European turnaround PE fund. As interim CEO of a portfolio company, he oversaw commercial sites across Europe and a manufacturing plant and returned the business to profitability. Earlier, as interim CFO of a distressed company, Mr. Sommer transformed the Finance function by upgrading organization and processes, managing liquidity, refinancing the company and reducing SG&A and COGS. He led spin-off and divestment processes including production of pro-forma financial statements as well as negotiating SPAs and TSAs. As Transformation Director of another portfolio company with ~€0.5 billion revenue, Mr. Sommer oversaw the carve-out and integration program, covering multiple functional and geographical workstreams.
Mr. Sommer spend several years working for an Oil & Gas major in their downstream business, focusing on operational performance improvement including working capital optimization and OPEX reduction. As deputy Finance Manager of a Lubricants plant he led budgeting, forecasting and cost-out exercises. He began his career at The Boston Consulting Group’s PE practice.
Mr. Sommer earned a Ph.D. (Dr. rer. soc. oec.) in business administration from the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU Wien). His thesis focused on value creation activities of PE funds in their portfolio companies. An Austrian national, Mr. Sommer is proficient in German, English and Italian.
