During the past decade, there has been an acceleration in the “corporatization” of healthcare, with hospitals merging into ever-larger health systems, health systems acquiring physician practices, and payers privatizing (e.g., Anthem) and acquiring each other. As a result, many physicians have lost autonomy, feel disengaged, are less productive and generate less income.

In this article, we highlight the importance of primary care physicians in the emerging value-based reimbursement system. Prevention, proactive intervention and self-management are integral to reducing the chronic disease burden, inclusive of costs.
