David Johnston

Most recently at A&M Mr. Johnston supported Nyrstar, a global diversified metals and mining business, through its financial restructuring, which successfully completed in July 2019. Mr. Johnston’s role was to manage group liquidity in a heavily distressed environment. In addition to treasury management, he coordinated and planned liquidity across multiple functions and plants, including inventory planning, general procurement, sales and site operations.
Previously at A&M Mr. Johnston assisted Seadrill, a global offshore oil driller, in its preparations for successful re-organisation through chapter 11. The re-organisation plan equitised $2.4 billion of unsecured bonds and raised $1 billion in new capital. Mr. Johnston worked across several workstreams with a small team to develop a legal entity level balance sheet forecast, manage cash and short term cash forecasting throughout chapter 11, plan an $11 billion intercompany balance reduction and execute a complex closing funds flow that included two rights offerings.
Mr. Johnston also worked with an underperforming global electronics distribution group. The project involved an assessment of the key business areas and the opportunities that existed, setting up a turnaround office to manage implementation and supporting the business in kicking off 22 priority initiatives (expected benefit was £20 million in the first year ~30 percent EBITDA improvement). His role was to assess opportunities within working capital and SG&A in the first phase, and to set up and lead the PMO in the implementation phase.
Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Johnston spent four years with Macquarie Bank in London, where he most recently served as an equity analyst covering UK and Nordic banks.
Mr. Johnston earned a bachelor’s degree in business and economics from Trinity College Dublin. He is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants.
