What factors played a pivotal role in steering you toward a career in consulting?

I have cultivated a rich background in banking, specializing in corporate and investment banking and credit risk across various financial institutions throughout my career. In my current role as a Senior Associate in Corporate Finance at A&M Mexico, I continue to navigate the dynamic landscape of merger and acquisition (M&A) transactions and valuations, a consistent theme in my professional journey. Yet, my experience at the firm extends beyond the expected, with approximately five projects focused on consulting services. These endeavors have honed my technical and presentation skills and propelled my career by introducing diversity into my professional portfolio.

Reflecting on your time in Latin America, could you elaborate on the skills you honed or acquired during your tenure at A&M?

My tenure at A&M Mexico has significantly broadened my perspective, equipping me with a comprehensive understanding of client needs throughout a company's life cycle. Before joining A&M, my viewpoint was confined within the boundaries of banking. However, within the dynamic environment at A&M, I've cultivated a robust comprehension of diverse services, including Performance Improvement and Restructuring. This evolution has enriched my professional insight and added a nuanced layer to my strategic approach.

How to Decide Whether to Return to a Previous Employer

You recently rejoined A&M in July 2023. What influenced your decision to return, and which facets of the A&M culture or opportunities drew you in?

Embracing the truth in the adage, "You always go back to the place where you were happy," I found myself wanting to return to A&M. During my time away from the firm, I keenly missed the unique working culture, the unparalleled work-life balance and the unwavering integrity of the individuals at A&M.

There was a phase when my work ceased to bring joy elsewhere. In stark contrast, at A&M, I consistently discover motivation from personal and team achievements. The genuine satisfaction derived from the dynamic environment and shared successes solidifies my conviction in returning to a place that feels like home.

What advice or insights would you offer to professionals contemplating a return to A&M or rejoining a former employer?

It is hard to find a culture like the one at A&M. The most valuable thing that A&M brings to the table is the work-life balance that the people have, together with the high level of professionalism.

How to Effectively Build Relationships in Consulting

How do you approach building and maintaining relationships with colleagues and clients, and how do you believe these relationships contribute to your effectiveness and success in your role?

In navigating interactions with colleagues and clients, it is important to remember that respect is sacred. It is essential that the person in front of you always feels comfortable in your presence. Another essential attribute, especially when approaching clients, is to be as informed as possible about the context of their business (“information is power”) and prepared to answer any questions that could arise during the approach or meeting. This is reflected in the client gaining confidence in you, and your presence or knowledge becomes necessary in the following meetings or client inquiries.

How would you describe Mexico’s business culture and work environment, and how does it differ from other countries where our firm operates?

Friendly and joyful. Usually, the professional friendships developed in the office transcend to personal friendships outside the office.

When engaging with clients or colleagues in Mexico, what cultural nuances or customs do you find crucial for successful collaboration?

In Mexico, a distinct cultural dynamic not often found in other countries is the significance of cultivating relationships beyond the professional realm. Transcending the purely professional to establish a personal connection is commonplace. Building trust and fostering a more profound, personal rapport often become integral aspects of the client-banker or client-consultant relationship. This unique approach recognizes the value of forging connections beyond the transactional, contributing to a more enduring and mutually beneficial partnership.

How to Achieve Synergy Through Personal and Professional Feats

As a triathlon competitor, how do the discipline and resilience cultivated in these events shape your strategy in navigating the consulting world? Could you provide insights into the art of balancing these two demanding pursuits?

In triathlon competitions, the importance of physical training is undeniable in pursuit of the goal. However, the significance of cultivating mental strength takes precedence, especially when exhaustion sets in, and it becomes the driving force to keep pushing forward. This parallel resonates with the demands of a career in banking or consulting, where the mind often becomes the source of resilience when the body feels fatigued. Maintaining a positive and determined mindset is pivotal in professional pursuits and extends to every facet of life.

The synergy between engaging in a demanding sport and my work at A&M was pivotal in my decision to return. At this firm, I discovered the flexibility essential for sustaining both pursuits seamlessly in my daily life. While it demands sacrifice, such as early wakeups and late nights, it is a sacrifice that proves worthwhile and, importantly, one that anyone can embrace for the sake of personal and professional fulfillment.

During college, you managed a broadcast program. How did that experience shape your communication skills, and in what ways do you leverage those skills in your current consulting role?

In order to go live with the broadcast program, the government in Mexico required individuals to pass a course in broadcasting and communication skills. This training and hands-on experience of running the program significantly contributed to honing my communication skills. The lessons learned in effectively conveying messages and confidently presenting during the broadcasting course have seamlessly translated into my professional career.
