Welcome Back Spotlight: Mackenzie Sullivan

Mackenzie Sullivan is a Senior Business Partner with Alvarez & Marsal’s (A&M) Insight Center in Houston. She earned a bachelor’s degree in management and Spanish from Hope College and an MBA from The University of Texas at Austin.
In the Q&A below, Mackenzie discusses how A&M has taught her to be very comfortable being uncomfortable, how she missed A&M’s people and culture, and how she loves exploring Houston with her son.
What led you to pursue a career in consulting? Were there any notable “ah-ha” moments that led you to that decision?
Following getting my MBA at UT Austin, I knew consulting was the next step for me in my career. I attended several on-campus information sessions to learn more about what firm might be the best fit for me. Tom Elsenbrook led a discussion about grit, talking about the power of passion and perseverance. This conversation really left an impact, I knew a career at A&M was exactly what I was looking for.
Tell us about your experience in Corporate Performance Improvement (CPI) and the skill sets you strengthened/acquired while at A&M?
CPI taught me so much. I met lifelong friends and I’ve never laughed so much. A&M has taught me to be very comfortable being uncomfortable and to rise to the occasion. CPI taught me to dive into the problem and trust that I’ll find the solution along the way.
You recently re-joined A&M in March 2021. What were some of your reasons for returning? What would you tell someone who has left and is contemplating coming back?
I missed the people and the culture! It’s hard to find a place where you can have fun while doing challenging, inspiring work. I re-joined A&M working as a Business Partner for the Insight Center and I’m so happy I’m back! It feels like coming back home.
What’s a career highlight you’re most proud of?
I’m grateful for the relationships I have here at A&M! I’m thankful for all the opportunities I have been given to be part of someone’s story. It’s been special to watch colleagues and clients grow and develop in their careers.
What energizes you about your career?
At A&M, the possibilities are endless – this is what energizes me the most. There is room for us all to not only grow in our careers but also change course and try something new.
What was your favorite class in business school and why?
My favorite class was our negotiation class. I loved it because this is a valuable tool you can use in every area of your life! My biggest takeaway from the class was the value of the relationship in negotiation. Negotiation is all about listening – to be effective negotiators, we must be active listeners and ensure we are creating a safe space for the other to be heard (and understood).
What are some of your hobbies and passions outside of work?
Walking with my 1-year-old son, Jack! We love exploring Houston on foot (well, he is in his stroller) admiring nature, and looking for all the neighborhood cats, dogs, and squirrels!
